All nine sects, with their English names

There are nine sects in Where Winds Meet, and the English names do not follow the Chinese closely enough to guess them. This is the full list with the martial art each sect teaches, plus the two naming traps that trip up guide sites.

Empty cells are deliberate. Where the source material does not pin a sect to a specific art, this page leaves the cell blank rather than filling it with a plausible guess. The two arts listed under Raging Tides are separate martial arts, not a single weapon with two names.

Which sect should a healer join?

Silver Needle (青溪). It is the sect centered on the fan arts — Panacea Fan (明川药典) for healing and Inkwell Fan (青山执笔) for the ink-brush fan style. The community shorthand is simple: "play a healer, pick Silver Needle". A fan build in a group also lines up with the team-amplifier path described in the Silkbind-Wings guide, though that build adds the drum as a second weapon.

Which sect has the best spear arts?

Raging Tides (狂澜). It carries both spear arts in the game — Heavenquaker Spear (九曲惊神枪) and Stormbreaker Spear (八方风雷枪) — which makes it the default home for spear players. The trade-off is a daily combat obligation built into the sect's identity; the upside is a steady supply of combat progress.

Which sect should a Gauntlets player join?

Mohist Hill (墨山道). It teaches Heavenwill Gauntlets, and it is also where you buy the gauntlet build's unresolved Inner Way, 三穷致知. If you intend to run the Gauntlets build, Mohist Hill is the sect that supplies both the weapon and the shop item.

Which sect is best for open-world PvP?

Midnight Blades (三更天), which teaches Infernal Twinblades and leans into stealth. Velvet Shade (玄影门) is the other stealth-flavored option in the termbase, tracked separately from the nine above; if stealth is the goal, compare both before committing reputation.

Be careful with this choice: sect reputation is the slowest resource to move, and PvP sect identity does not transfer to the equalized bracket the way players expect. Check which PvP modes apply your gear before picking a sect for PvP alone.

What are the two naming traps?

1. Pear Garden is not a sect name

The Chinese name 梨园 literally means "Pear Garden", the historical term for a theatrical troupe. The sect's English name is The Masked Troupe. Using "Pear Garden" as a sect name in an English guide sends players looking for a sect that does not exist under that label.

2. The Inkbound Order is new

文津馆 only arrived on global with version 2.3. Any "all sects" list published before that update is missing one, which is a reliable way to date a guide. This page includes it.

How is the sect list different from a tier list?

It is not a ranking, and this site does not publish a sect tier list. Sects differ in which art they teach and which activities they reward; the "best" sect depends on the weapon you want to end up holding. A tier list of sects would be a tier list of martial arts with reputation attached, and the martial arts list covers that part directly.

What should I do after joining?

  1. Learn the sect's signature art before evaluating it — the sect's identity is the art, not the daily tasks.
  2. Do not convert gear to a new sect's stat priorities in the first week; start at the gear chain instead.
  3. Check the sect shop for unresolved or unlisted items (Mohist Hill's 三穷致知 is one example).
